Jackie Chan was here!

Yesterday was quite the day! In the morning, I met up with some other exchange students who helped me get checked in when I arrived the night before. None of them were Americans or native English speakers, but they all spoke English and very well. We took the MTR, which is the subway system in the Hong Kong area. It's very widely used, and clean! First we went to a nearby mall, where we got breakfast converters and prepaid cell phones.

On a side note, because there is not much room to build outwards in Hong Kong, they tend to build upwards. Everywhere you look there are very tall buildings, no ranch style houses here. I live on the 7th floor in my hostel, and it goes up to 10 floors. The apartment buildings in Tuen Mun, the area where Lingnan is, must be over 50 stories. The mall was also like this, with about 7 floors, filled with smaller shops as opposed to the larger department stores I am used to in America.

Anyways, after this we went to Victoria Harbor in the heart of Hong Kong. The view was absolutely amazing, I have never seen a city so big. We walked along the Avenue of the Stars, where actors such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan have left their hand prints. Then we met up with another student and had a Starbucks coffee right on the Bay. We ended up taking the ferry to Hong Kong Island where we found a hangout spot on the top of a building with yet another spectacular view of the mainland side we had just come from.

To end our night, we watched the light show on the bay and all of the buildings across the bay lit up to the music, and then some Indian food for dinner. It was a perfect nightcap to a great day.

The beginnings of my Hong Kong adventure

I arrived to the airport (Detroit) last Wednesday with plenty of time to spare. We departed at about 7:30 pm, August 17th. The flight was about 15 hours, which went well. I met some cool people on the plane and got some sleep in. We actually flew north, through Canada, Russia and Mongolia which sort of surprised me, I expected we would go either east or west but that was faster. Unfortunately, my flight was delayed which caused me to miss my ride to Lingnan University, but our school's handbook contained specific directions for what to do in such a situation. I was able to take a bus, and then a taxi directly to my hostel where I checked in at about 2:00 am, August 19th. It was such a strange feeling, wondering what happened to August 18th. The 12 hour time difference can account for some of that. And, some how, I suffered no jet lag! Yay!
